The Quella Varsity Oxford Commuter showcases classic Oxford Blue styling and a lightweight chromoly frame, paired with a Shimano 7-speed in-hub gear system for smooth, versatile riding. Ready for city or country, it delivers comfort, low maintenance, and everyday reliability straight out of the box.

Quella has been at the forefront of single-speed urban cycling since we started out, but many of our cycle to work customers have been pushing us for a bike with all of the features to meet their commuting needs straight out of the box, including some gears for the odd hill that they might face on their way to work.  So, we got to work and have created what we believe is 'the perfect commuter'.

Our bikes have always been nimble and quick which commuters love, but they wanted some gearing suitable for urban riding especially in some of our hillier cities.  The new model is equipped with a premium Shimano Nexus 7-speed, in-hub gear system, offering more versatility for city riding, with enough ratio to easily deal with the odd 'urban' hill.  The in-hub system preserves Quella's clean looks and avoids the 'day to day' build-up of grit and grime we have all experienced with standard derailleur systems and has much lower maintenance requirements. It also features a brilliant coaster brake for extra stopping power.

Our riders wanted a bike that can handle the streets, but isn't so heavy that there ride is slow and cumbersome.  The Quella steel frame is sturdy but the bike is still light and fast to get you to work on time.

Comfort is also high on the commuter's list and the range comes with a comfier saddle for the rider who isn't accustomed to sitting on a 3 inch wide strip of carbon on a Sunday morning!  We also know everyone has different riding positions so we have included an adjustable stem on all our Commuter bikes.

The weather is not always the commuter's friend and no one wants a wet bum when they arrive at the office so our Commuter bikes include our detachable mudguards as standard with a simple trigger that allows you to remove the guards in the summer months.

Commuters hate potholes and our cities have loads of them, our standard 25mm tyres are fast but give a firm sporty ride.  Our commuters told us they wanted a smooth-running tyre that could handle the bumps but didn't slow them down and they really, really wanted less punctures!  So, we now fit upgraded, puncture resistant 32C tyres providing greater protection and a smoother less firm ride.

Luggage, our commuters wanted room for luggage and many don't like riding with a rucksack so a sturdy rear rack has been included which can be paired with our Quella waterproof panniers with a neat quick release system for easy removal from the bike.

Cyclist Paul’s Varsity Oxford

Last few years had belt drive bikes, because the high mileage I do, better on maintenance.
Decided try the Varsity, bit cheaper. Good communication from Quella.
Arrived, more than pedals to be attached, front wheel, handlebar also.
Please note you need to check the tyre pressure, mine only had 30 psi when it came.
Looks great,
Not a good maiden voyage left pedal unscrewed, only did 30 miles, bother.
Contacted the helpful Jess and a new crank delivered. Mu local Halfords fitted with new resin pedals.
Out again 25/06/25, much better ride, difficult to get used to no back pedal, first bike in forty years, need to get used to.
Handles quite well, used to Shimano Nexus 8, again need to get used to.
First gear on a steep climb is sometimes challenging.
Did 78 miles, saddle comfortable, very pleased, lost left rack bolt, but as we all know cycling is bumpy, potholes abound, always challenging.
Let’s hope for many years of good exercise and keeping fit and economical maintenance.

Great Bike and Customer service - sizing is definitely awry!

TLDR - Bike is great, Jess & Chris are very helpful, sizing is seriously inaccurate which is an issue for an online retailer!

I am 168cm, so fit right in the middle of the 54cm frame range on the website. After it arrived I took it to my local bike shop and they told me that they wouldnt recommend a bike of this size to anyone under 6ft/180cm. Jess was extremely helpful and understanding and arranged to switch it for a 51cm frame (size guide says 147-160cm). I would say I am STILL on the shorter side for this bike, so unless I am the weirdest shaped person on the planet (I'm not) I think they need to look at their sizing.

The bike itself is lovely - the colour is even nicer in person and it is a real pleasure to ride. The mudguard system is very neat and I really enjoy the internal gear hub. The fact you cant backpedal takes a second to get used to, but the addition of a third brake instead is actually quite useful.
