Varsity Cambridge Classic Geared Commuter
Varsity Cambridge Classic Geared Commuter
The Varsity Commuter is equipped with a Shimano 7-speed in-hub gear system, offering more versatility for city and country riding. The in-hub system provides smooth transitions between gears, allowing you to easily handle different terrains and inclines.
The in-built gearing system avoids the 'day to day' build-up of grit and grime as experienced in standard derailleur systems and therefore much lower maintenance requirements.
The Commuter range comes with riser handlebars and a comfy saddle. We also know everyone has different riding positions so we have included an adjustable stem on all our Commuter ranges so you can amend your riding position to suit your preference.
Our Commuter bikes include our detachable mudguards as standard keeping you dry from the inclement weather. with a simple trigger that allows you to remove the guards in the summer months.
All Commuters also come with puncture resistant 32C tyres providing you with greater protection from road debris. As they are also wider than our standard 25C tyres they provide improved grip and more stable acceleration capabilities on dry surfaces. Additionally, they can also provide an enhanced driving experience in very specific situations, including in challenging winter weather road conditions.
Built around an upgraded 4130 chromoly frame and fork with double butted tubing, the Varsity models are lighter, faster and stronger feature sealed headset bearings, an intricate aluminium 44T crank, and a full Quella Varsity Premium finishing kit for improved comfort and performance.
Our stunning Varsity Cambridge is finished in a classic Cambridge Blue coloured frame with complementary Quella Varsity premium finish kit. Like the two great universities, it competes with the Varsity Oxford for the top spot.

Aesthetically it’s lovely. Having brazed on cable clips or hoops, like I have had on any alloy frames previously, would be more functional and aesthetic than cable ties. I bought some stick on clips and much may look better if they hold to the frame. From a box to use perspective there was more to do than I’ve had with online ordered bikes previously. If you are a novice you will probably not have the skills to piece this together. I’ve removed the luggage rack as it’s not needed by me, but I wanted the 32” tan rubber and mud guards. On that topic, the mud guards rub a little with the 32” tyres. I’ve bent and adjusted as much as I can. Possibly lowering the pressure will completely remove it. One thing that Quella should make clear with the hub gear, is that it has an internal braking mechanism operated by freewheeling or more aggressively by back pedalling. If you have had 3 speed Sturmey Archer hub gears, you will not be used to this. Lastly, I think putting the Shimano 8 speed hub gear wouldn’t have cost more to put on this package and maybe an 11 speed option would be nice. Small points for what is a lovely comfortable nice riding bicycle. Ps I have added tan ergo handlebar grips for comfort and look, and splashes out in a tan Brookes B17 saddle, which finishes off the retro look and well worth the investment to uplift the experience. Maybe another good option for Quella to add to their catalogue.
