The Quella Varsity Cambridge Commuter features an iconic Cambridge Blue finish, a robust yet lightweight chromoly frame, and a Shimano 7-speed in-hub gear system for effortless versatility. Designed for both city and country rides, it combines comfort, reliability, and low-maintenance commuting in one striking package.
Quella has been at the forefront of single-speed urban cycling since we started out, but many of our cycle to work customers have been pushing us for a bike with all of the features to meet their commuting needs straight out of the box, including some gears for the odd hill that they might face on their way to work. So, we got to work and have created what we believe is 'the perfect commuter'.
Our bikes have always been nimble and quick which commuters love, but they wanted some gearing suitable for urban riding especially in some of our hillier cities. The new model is equipped with a premium Shimano Nexus 7-speed, in-hub gear system, offering more versatility for city riding, with enough ratio to easily deal with the odd 'urban' hill. The in-hub system preserves Quella's clean looks and avoids the 'day to day' build-up of grit and grime we have all experienced with standard derailleur systems and has much lower maintenance requirements. It also features a brilliant coaster brake for extra stopping power.
Our riders wanted a bike that can handle the streets, but isn't so heavy that there ride is slow and cumbersome. The Quella steel frame is sturdy but the bike is still light and fast to get you to work on time.
Comfort is also high on the commuter's list and the range comes with a comfier saddle for the rider who isn't accustomed to sitting on a 3 inch wide strip of carbon on a Sunday morning! We also know everyone has different riding positions so we have included an adjustable stem on all our Commuter bikes.
The weather is not always the commuter's friend and no one wants a wet bum when they arrive at the office so our Commuter bikes include our detachable mudguards as standard with a simple trigger that allows you to remove the guards in the summer months.
Commuters hate potholes and our cities have loads of them, our standard 25mm tyres are fast but give a firm sporty ride. Our commuters told us they wanted a smooth-running tyre that could handle the bumps but didn't slow them down and they really, really wanted less punctures! So, we now fit upgraded, puncture resistant 32C tyres providing greater protection and a smoother less firm ride.
Luggage, our commuters wanted room for luggage and many don't like riding with a rucksack so a sturdy rear rack has been included which can be paired with our Quella waterproof panniers with a neat quick release system for easy removal from the bike.

Super fast delivery, great and beautiful bike, absolutely love it!
Aesthetically it’s lovely. Having brazed on cable clips or hoops, like I have had on any alloy frames previously, would be more functional and aesthetic than cable ties. I bought some stick on clips and much may look better if they hold to the frame. From a box to use perspective there was more to do than I’ve had with online ordered bikes previously. If you are a novice you will probably not have the skills to piece this together. I’ve removed the luggage rack as it’s not needed by me, but I wanted the 32” tan rubber and mud guards. On that topic, the mud guards rub a little with the 32” tyres. I’ve bent and adjusted as much as I can. Possibly lowering the pressure will completely remove it. One thing that Quella should make clear with the hub gear, is that it has an internal braking mechanism operated by freewheeling or more aggressively by back pedalling. If you have had 3 speed Sturmey Archer hub gears, you will not be used to this. Lastly, I think putting the Shimano 8 speed hub gear wouldn’t have cost more to put on this package and maybe an 11 speed option would be nice. Small points for what is a lovely comfortable nice riding bicycle. Ps I have added tan ergo handlebar grips for comfort and look, and splashes out in a tan Brookes B17 saddle, which finishes off the retro look and well worth the investment to uplift the experience. Maybe another good option for Quella to add to their catalogue.
